Of course, strictly speaking it&#8217;s not a lake &#8211; but a Mere!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great place to base yourself for fantastic scenery, walks and viewpoints, and the shores of the lake and its sister village: <strong>Bowness-on-Windermere,<\/strong> just a straight mile walk downhill.\u00a0 Both villages are an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and shops, and are busy and bustling all year round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windermere<\/strong> is also home to the only train station in the heart of the Lake District:\u00a0 Windermere Station, with connections to Oxenholme and the West Coast mainline.\u00a0 All the seasons are special here, but spring brings lighter days, blossom and spring flowers, lambs in the field and bird song.\u00a0 Whatever the weather, you&#8217;ll always experience our warm and friendly hospitality.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t Miss: <\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Brockhole Visitor Centre: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A 5-minute drive or 2 mile walk from Windermere is Brockhole Visitor Centre, an amazing place to spend a day. Here you\u2019ll find adventure playground, Tree Top Trek, cafes and restaurants and shops, boat and kayak hire, and archery, pony trekking and walks.\u00a0 If the weather changes, there&#8217;s a shop to browse, and galleries and exhibitions to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The steamers stop here too so you can hop on and off as you explore. Their shop on the high street in Windermere is full of gorgeous objects,\u00a0 featuring many Cumbrian artisan makers and artists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Eat and Drink<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/03\/shutterstock_641152852-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"645\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of great places to choose from in Windermere, here\u2019s a few ideas:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Caf\u00e9 at Lakeland:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Open every day with last food orders 3pm, and cakes 4pm. Home-made goodies, and a great view out of the picture windows over the town.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Homeground:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some of the best coffee around, homemade cakes and amazing homemade breakfasts, salads, and lunches. There is also a large outdoor seating area with plenty of undercover space.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Little Ice Cream Shop: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Handmade delicious gelato often sees queues down the street! Ciao&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/Chocolate-ice-cream.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bandito Burrito:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>is an unfussy caf\u00e9 offering Mexican specialities, vegan dishes, and coffees, plus take-out option.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where to walk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Orrest Head: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Just across the road from here, you\u2019ll see the entrance to the gentle hike up <strong>Orrest Head<\/strong>: the famous landmark with breathtaking views up and down the Lake, and the place which first inspired a certain AW Wainwright to begin his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Hills.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1474\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1474\" class=\"wp-image-1474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/Orrest-Head.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view from the top of Orrest Head across the lake<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Millerground:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A short lakeside amble, but with fabulous views right across the lakeshore and beyond.\u00a0 There are a few parking spaces close to it on Rayrigg Road, or you can simply walk from either Windermere or Bowness centres, or from your lodge at Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>From Windermere to Bowness-on-Windermere:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Get your best foot forward and enjoy a 1-mile stroll straight down the main street and you\u2019ll reach the bustling town of Bowness, and the glittering lake.<\/p>\n<p>Bowness even has a cinema and lots of places to browse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakedistrictlodgeholidays.co.uk\/blog\/best-restaurants-in-bowness\/\">eat and drink<\/a> and stop a while. \u00a0If you don\u2019t want to walk back, there are plenty of buses and taxis.\u00a0 <strong>Bowness-on-Windermere<\/strong> as its name suggests, sits on the lakeshore and is home to many different water activities, with several marinas and sailing clubs dotted along the shoreline, and steamers and launches cruise from here all over the lake.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3094\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3094\" class=\"wp-image-3094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/shutterstock_331338599-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boat landings at Bowness-on-Windermere<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Viewpoint: Hammarbank:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is an easily accessible viewpoint close to Millerground on Rayrigg Road.
