{"id":545,"date":"2017-11-24T13:29:56","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T13:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ldlh.cottage-search.com\/blog\/armitt-museum-and-library-ambleside\/"},"modified":"2023-12-04T15:16:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-04T15:16:13","slug":"armitt-museum-and-library-ambleside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lakedistrictlodgeholidays.co.uk\/blog\/armitt-museum-and-library-ambleside\/","title":{"rendered":"Armitt Museum and Library, Ambleside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Founded by artists and writers, the Armitt is a unique combination of museum, library and gallery, which focuses on the cultural heritage of the Lake District.\u00a0\u00a0 The founder, Mary Louisa Armitt opend the library in 1912, to develop a community focus for artists and writers and is still very much alive, vibrant and relevant today.<\/p>\n<p>Beatrix Potter was one of the Armitt\u2019s early supporters, the museum holds a number of her family\u2019s books as well as her personal first editions of the \u2018little\u2019 white books.\u00a0 Her major gift however came in the form of a large number of exquisite botanical watercolours and are incredibly beautiful and detailed. The central permanent exhibition:\u00a0 \u2018Beatrix Potter, Image and Reality\u2019, is definitely worth a visit as these works reveal fascinating and lesser-known aspects of her life story.<\/p>\n<p>The museum also houses one of the country\u2019s most important collections of artwork by Kurt Schwitters, who influenced the development of twentieth-century art and lived in Ambleside during his final years.<\/p>\n<p>Hints &amp; Tips: The musuem has accessible toilets, a car park and shop.
