Low Sizergh Barn is a traditional Lakeland farm with a difference. Owned by the National Trust and tenanted for generations by the Park family, Low Sizergh takes farming to a new dimension.
Foodies will be in heaven in the 17th century barn farm shop at Low Sizergh, near Kendal, with craft and gift galleries, and the food and groceries feel like you really are shopping local. You can watch the cows being milked whilst enjoying the tea room menu, or take off on a farm trail through beautiful countryside.
The Low Sizergh Barn farm trail starts just outside of the 17th century Westmorland stone barn, where you’ve just enjoyed shopping or the tea room. As well as a lovely walk, it gives you a good background to where your food comes from. You’ll pass by the cows and hens in the fields, the vegetable plots, and the fruit trees in the orchard. Most importantly, the plant, animal and bird life here is ever-changing with the seasons, and sits alongside the livestock. The trail is just under 2 miles and a great way to learn about natural farming principles around this beautiful farm.
Free range hens
You can’t miss the lovely flock of 700 laying free-range hens produce hundreds of eggs each day, for sale in the farm shop.
Ancient hedgerow
At least 400 years old and contains many species of wild plants and flowers. You’ll see swallows swooping here in the summer as they head for the cow pastures looking for insects.
Ancient woodland
The wood at Low Sizergh is called Low Park Wood and contains some magnificent mature oak trees. If you see some dead branches left on, they are important food sources and wildlife habitats. You’ll also spot birds and bats, feeding on insect pests that helps the farmer.
Dairy cows
The farm has 170 Holstein and Swedish Red dairy cows, which are are milked twice a day and you can see this from the tearoom’s viewing gallery at 3.30pm every afternoon.
Stone walls
A traditional feature of Cumbria, these were built in the early 1800’s. The outer stones enclose a centre of rubble, capped with top stones called ‘cams’ and importantly, they provide habitat for lichens, lizards and ladybirds. Find out more about Low Sizergh Barn here.
