People jumping above Fleetwith Pike

The best Via Ferrata in the UK!  Set in England’s last remaining working slate mine, in the heart of the Lake District between Borrowdale and Buttermere, near to Keswick, this is a day you’ll never forget.  You’ll be up on top of the fells with amazing views all around.   The mine itself produces the world famous Westmorland Green slate – beautiful and functional – a 450 million year old material that has been extracted here for centuries.

You’ll have an unforgettable experience tackling the dizzy heights of beautiful Fleetwith Pike.

So, what do you do in a slate mine in the middle of nowhere?! ! Well, there’s a Classic  route, which is suitable for most ages and abilities, while the Xtreme offers a more challenging experience for those adrenaline-seekers out there.  The infinity bridge looks pretty spectacular – and scary to us !!If heights aren’t your thing, go deep down into the mine and find out all about the fascinating history of the nearly extinct craft of slate mining.   If you can’t decide which one, choose an All Day pass and take your time!

The mine is quite a celebrity in itself – having appeared over the years on Countryfile; more recently it appeared on ‘The A Word’,  Ben Fogle Climbed the Via Ferrata for Countrywise; Coast to Coast with Tony Robinson, and Great Railway Journeys.

Why We like it: Well, it has to be said that some of us don’t!!  But those who are good with heights, and like a rush of adrenaline and excitement love this experience.  There’s also a  shop where you can browse lots of slate products – for home, kitchen and personal – the lovely Westmorland green slate is quite unique and literally a piece of the Lake District to take home with you.
