Peter Rabbit Statue

The World of Beatrix Potter is a little bit of magic in the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere on Crag Brow. It tells the story of Peter Rabbit and his friends and about the life of the inspiration that is Beatrix Potter. Before you arrive, download a free activity booklet from the website for your child to enjoy, includes lots of quizzes, puzzles and games while they explore.

When you arrive at The World of Beatrix Potter, you’ll watch a short 5 minute film introducing you to the author, her stories and illustrations and why she was so important to the Lake District. The film room doors then open through to the main exhibition, stepping first into Jemima Puddle-duck’s woodland glade and then onto many other very much loved characters including the famous Peter Rabbit himself.

Capture the atmosphere, sounds and smells of the wonderful 3D scenes straight from Beatrix Potter’s beautiful stories. Take a stroll around Peter rabbit’s garden, seeing the gooseberry bush where Peter got caught in a nest as he tried to escape Mr McGregor. See if your children can spot Mrs Tiggy-winkle’s in her kitchen folding her fresh laundry and enjoy a perfect photo opportunity.

Take a virtual walk in Beatrix Potter’s beloved countryside using a computer projection, visiting places which inspired Miss Potter’s work and walk along a timeline which tells the story of the author’s life.

When you emerge from the exhibition why not visit the shop and take home a memory from your day. All that excitement makes you hungry, so head for the Tea Room which is open every day from 10am, and is full of tempting treats made using fresh local ingredients, home-grown salads and vegetable grown in their very own garden. Children can even enjoy a scrummy Peter Rabbit picnic basket with a selection of sandwiches, snack, fruit and drink. or there is a special children’s hot food menu available.

Tips/Hints: Why not combine a visit with a lake cruise departing from Bowness. You should also aim to visit Beatrix Potter’s house- Hill Top – at Far Sawrey, on the other side of Windermere, to get the full picture about her life and love of the Lake District. Take the Windermere ferry across for an easy way to get there.

Why we like it: Located in the centre of Bowness and perfect place to visit on those rainy days.
