Formerly ‘The White House,’ this Lake District pub was renamed The Mortal Man based on its nickname given by locals.

An ale house has existed on the grounds of The Mortal Man since 1689, and photographs of the how the building has changed over the years can be seen inside.

There’s plenty of seating, with windows framing views out onto the surrounding greenery. The roaring open fire is a cosy spot to warm up following an afternoon of outdoor adventures through the fells.

Where is The Mortal Man?

The Mortal Man sits a short distance north of the village of Troutbeck in the Troutbeck Valley.

The valley itself is a truly breathtaking location. There’s an abundance of traditional Lakeland architecture to see, including the National Trust’s Townend, the former home of the farming family the Brownes for generations.

There are countless walks leading through the valley from the doorstep of The Mortal Man. Head straight up to High Street on one side, or up to Wansfell on the other.

Wansfell is the perfect hike for a beginner looking for a small challenge. You’ll be rewarded with captivating views across the countryside over to Ambleside and beyond.

Be sure to peruse the tiny lanes of Troutbeck after your visit, where you can marvel at the old church or the stone-built cottages decorating the village.
