One of the prettiest villages in the Lake District, Hawkshead is a quaint, traditional lakeland village set in a beautiful location with lots of walks and views nearby. Enjoy the Grizedale Forest, with bike trails, sculpture walks and events. Or visit Tarn Hows for gorgeous Lake District views, and up to Latterbarrow and Claife Heights with panoramic views of the distant fells and the lake.

Beatrix Potter based many of her famous little white books on places around Hawkshead, and her house Hill Top, is at Far Sawrey just 2 miles from Hawkshead. Her husband, William Heelis, had his solicitors office in the centre of Hawkshead, which is now the Beatrix Potter Gallery where you can see items from the original collection. Many references to Hawkshead feature in her drawings, watercolours and writings. The character Johnny Town Mouse is based on the village doctor, Dr Parsons, a great friend of her husband.

William Wordsworth also attended school in Hawkshead for a while.

Nearby Wray Castle is well worth a visit, and leads out to a lovely lakeshore wander with a 4-mile path leading down to Claife Station and the Courtyard Cafe.
