Just a short drive from Grange-over-Sands sits the very elegant Holker Hall and Gardens. Home to the Cavendish family, Holker has been passed down through the generations and never sold. It is now home to Lucy Cavendish and her husband Tor McLaren. On a recent visit we were lucky enough to bump into Lucy who was both warm and hospitable.
From the moment you arrive at Holker Hall, you immediately sense this is a well loved and cared for family home in the perfect setting. There are a number of rooms to visit from the stately main hall and billiard room to the impressive library which contains some 3,500 beautifully bound old books. The striking oak staircase takes you to the bedrooms. One of which is named after Queen Mary from when she stayed at Holker Hall in 1937. You will be treated to a beautiful display of sumptuous antique furniture, fine art work and magnificent grand fireplaces. There are a number of welcoming and knowledgeable staff on standby who are happy to share the hall’s history and stories. As the house is still used by the family you can wander without restriction as no areas are roped off.
Come rain or shine, the award winning gardens are certainly worth a visit
Meander through the displays of exotic trees and plants, cascading fountains, the Meadow and the Labyrinth. There’s even a natural amphitheatre offering visitors a chance to simply sit and relax in this idyllic setting. It’s certainly a garden that will inspire even the most experienced gardener.
