Under the Aquarium

The Aquarium of the Lakes is found at the southerly end of Windermere, just past Newby Bridge and up towards Lakeside.  It is a perfect place to learn and explore about all different type of animals big and small. With daily talks and feeds throughout the day along with an underwater viewing tunnel, you’ll be absorbed in all the creatures there, regardless of the weather outside!

The Lakes Aquarium is home to hundreds of amazing creatures;  and you can see local wildlife from around the Lake District and more exotic species from around the world, including mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and fish and insects.

They have a number of choices for food and shopping – 1872 is a shopping and food experience on the ground floor -kind of ‘grab and go’.  Oscar’s cafe is upstairs (only open in the main season),  overlooking the Lake;  both of them serve Starbucks coffee.  They are to be found at the same location as the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, and Windermere Lake Cruises,  – so you can buy a combination ticket and enjoy a steam train ride or a boat cruise at the same time.

The Lakes Aquarium is involved in conservation projects on a local, regional and international scale of many creatures of international interest. They have a special education programme and welcome group visits. They also can be hired as a special venue for a birthday party – imagine sharing your birthday with piranhas, diving ducks and otters!

Tips/Hints: Check their website for updates on feeding times – these are really thrilling moments to be in the Aquarium.  Children under 3 get in free.

Why we like it: We love seeing the otter families being fed – every day at 1030am and 3pm.  You can buy an annual pass to come as often as you like all year round.  You can choose to arrive by car, by boat or by steam train!
