Unsworths Yard

Nestled into the picturesque village of Cartmel, lies the charming Unsworth’s Yard. This delightful courtyard is home to a small number of local business, most noteably the brewery which is named after the yard. The yard has been with the Unsworth’s family since 1922 when it initially operated as a hualage business. Brothers Peter and David Unsworth have since created a space which attracts both visitors and locals alike to sample award winning cheeses and home brewed craft ale.

Unsworth’s Yard Brewery

Open for tours, tastings and sales, the Unsworth’s Yard Brewery is an open-door brewery tucked away in the courtyard. Set behind a large glass window, visitors are welcome to watch the brewing process and interact with the friendly staff. You can also try the cask brew at the tasting bar. If you love beer, this is definitely worth a visit!

Cartmel Drinkshop & Wine Snug

Located on the corner of the yard, The Cartmel Drinkshop offers a fantastic selection of wines, spirits and liquors from a more select range of producers. From single estate wines to local gins, you’ll be sure to find something to tempt your tastebuds. The friendly and knowledgable staff offer a ‘try before you buy’ option across some of the range ensuring you walk away with a bottle you know you like.

Tucked away in the room next door you’ll find the Wine Snug. It’s a cosy and welcoming space in which to enjoy a glass of something. The automatic wine dispensing machine is both fun and novel. You can choose from 4 whites and 4 reds with helpful guidance and suggestions from the knowledgable staff.

Enjoy a pizza with your wine or beer! You can now order a yummy stone baked pizza from Cartmel Cheeses showcasing some of their amazing produce. Simply order and enjoy with either a beer or glass wine – you choose! You can even take the pizza into the wine snug. Available until 8.30pm Friday and Saturday nights.

Mallard Tea Shop

Mallard is a quaint little tea shop offering some truly delicious cakes, yummy sandwiches such as their popular Cumberland butty and other treats such as crumpets, soup and potted shrimps. Located just by the priory, with outside seating, it’s a perfect place to rest after a busy day exploring. The food is freshly made and always served with a small. A hidden gem!

Tips/hints: Parking can be an issue at times, particulary bank holidays and school holidays. It’s also worth checking prior to visiting if there are any events taking place such as the Cartmel Races. It’s an open-door brewery so the small team do a great job of balancing the demands of a working brewery as well as keen visitors. If you fancy a closer look, or have any questions just let the friendly guys know. When visiting the Wine Snug, why not try a cheese board from Cartmel Cheeses to accompany your wine! They also organise events such as the upcoming Unstock 2019 – 3 days of pizza and music. Check out their website for details.

Why we love it: What’s not to love! Beer, wine, cheese, tea and cake! You could very easily spend an entire summer’s day here. It’s a great place to sit outside and simply indulge in the fabulous food and drink on offer.
