Queens Head Hotel in summer

The Queen’s Head is an iconic lakeland coaching inn from the 17th Century.  It is 4 miles from Ambleside and Windermere, snuggled on the main route up to the Kirkstone Pass,  through the delightful village of Troutbeck with fantastic views of High Street, Garburn Pass and Ill Bell.

In 2014, there was a huge fire; miraculously the extraordinary bar, constructed from an Elizabeth four-poster bed originally from Appleby Castle. survived the fire, as did many other original features – ancient iron doors and gnarly beams, and it reopened in 2017 after a loving restoration project.

You’ll find a real warm welcome and cosy drinking area; where log fires crackle away – a great spot to rest with your dog after a walk. Food is homely classic pub food, with a Cumbrian flair and Robinson’s award-winning cask ales.
We have always found the service to warm and welcoming.

Why we love it: Its close proximity to Limefitt Park makes it a popular and convenient choice for those looking to relax in a peaceful, scenic location. It’s also a favourite amongst us staff who have dined there on several occasions or simply popped in for a drink post hike. Dogs and  boots are welcome!
Tip:. You can walk to Ambleside from Troutbeck via Skelghyll woods and the viewpoint at Jenkin’s Crag.

The Queen’s Head is a dog-friendly pub – lots to choose from in the Lakes!
