Whether you’re an avid art enthusiast or just appreciate seeing wonderful things, a stroll around the charming Gem Town of Cockermouth wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the wonderful Percy House Gallery.
Tucked away on Market Place, the town’s colourful Georgian town square, this historic 14th century art gallery is brimming with unique and unusual arts and crafts. A large hand picked collection of works by Cumbrian and British artists can be found here, ranging from jewellery and ceramics, to paintings and photographs.
But not only do we recommend dedicating plenty of time to admire the artworks on display in Percy House Gallery – the building itself is also a sight to behold. Dating back to the Tudor period and possibly earlier, original features like the oak beam ceilings, original flagstone floors, fireplaces and plasterwork add even more charm to this gem of a gallery. What’s more? There’s a total of seven historic rooms in which the artworks are displayed, making the gallery in Cockermouth feel like there’s a masterpieces around every inch and corner.

Tips / Hints: In one of the upstairs rooms is a carved plaster ceiling with the date 1598. The centre of the ceiling bears a Tudor rose and lover’s knot with the initials ‘AM’. Also depicted are various hunting animals and birds. Don’t forget to look out for them during your visit to a gallery in Cockermouth!
Why we love it: Not every gallery can boast such a warm welcome as the one that awaits you in Percy House. Right from your first step into the 14 century building, the experience is one to be cherished.
Unfortunately, due to the grade II star listing on the building, there is no easy access for the disabled into this Cockermouth gallery.
