Our favourite things to do in the Lakes over Easter

Easter falls late this year, and the forecast is good for some bright and breezy weather.

Easter is that magical time when winter is on its way out and we can all enjoy the milder weather and longer days.  Breath in that spring air and welcome spring flowers as nature begins to unfold…

It wouldn’t be the same without an Easter Egg hunt or two, and there are plenty to choose from all over the Lakes!

Egg Hunts

Kids of all ages love an Egg Hunt and there are plenty to choose from all over the Lakes. Here’s a selection:

  1. The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness has a treasure hunt on Easter Sunday (21st) and Easter Monday (22nd). Every child can complete a mini-treasure hunt in the garden and win a mini-chocolate egg and a sticker.
  2. The National Trust puts on a fantastic selection of Easter Egg hunt with Cadbury, at many locations.  Hunts are on all over the Easter weekend.,Good Friday to Easter Monday.  Sizergh Castle, Townend, Claife Viewing Station,  Fell Foot, Hill Top,  Wray Castle and even on board  Steam Yacht Gondola on Coniston Water and around Tarn Hows.
  3. The Lakeland Maze Farm Park near Kendal opens on Saturday 24th March until Sunday 15th April 2018 offering loads of fun activities and is open 10-5 over the Bank Holiday weekend.
  4. Heron Corn Mill, Beetham has it’s Easter Egg hunt on Good Friday: 11:00am – 4:00pm as well as fabulous chocolatey prizes up for grabs! There’s also plenty of fresh bread and hot cross buns courtesy of the ‘Bread of Hero’ team, and a variety of Easter themed cakes and mouth-watering home-made pies for sale.
  5. Brockhole Visitor Centre, Windermere have lots of fun Easter activities:  A hunt the Herdy trail; Giant Easter hunt (Good Friday and Easter Monday only), Drop in art sessions and off-road driving experiences as well as the usual fantastic outdoor fun, with their adventure playground, boat hire and Go Ape.

Alternatively, why not make up your own Easter Egg hunt?

Buy some small eggs, create a trail with a bigger egg for the final prize; even teens will join in when there is free chocolate or other treats available.

Or use the ‘task and reward’ theory if you’re all out on a walk.  Magically producing choccie eggs from your rucksack will be sure to boost little legs up those hills.

Take a spring walk..

One of the best things to do is just get out there!  Maybe you enjoy a high-level walk with views for miles? Or just a potter around a lakeshore and tea and cake to follow? You can’t beat just being outside and enjoying nature and wildlife.

  1. Check out these favourites from our friends at the National Trust.
  2. Here’s Five Great Walks around Windermere thanks to the Lake District National Park.
  3. The classic Tarn Hows walk is great for families and you can finish up at the Drunken Duck, or lots of other pubs around Ambleside.
  4. Gummer’s How, at the south end of Windermere, just above Fell Foot on the Newby Bridge road has a handy car park and is a ‘short sharp walk’ with a fabulous viewpoint.
  5. The classic Orrest Head just over the road from Windermere Train station is a 30 minute walk uphill to the top, where you’ll be rewarded by views all around.  This is also the view that changed a certain Alfred Wainwright’s life back in 1930, band sparked  his passion for the Lake District. He arrived by train Windermere: “…quite suddenly, we emerged from the trees and were on a bare headland, and, as though a curtain had dramatically been torn aside, beheld a truly magnificent view. …”
