Windermere village grew up around the railway station and is about a mile and a half or a brisk walk downhill to the lake itself. Down by the lake you'll find the other bustling centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. A short walk across the road from the train station takes you to Orrest Head, an outstanding viewpoint. It was the first 'summit' in Lakeland visited by Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous guidebooks in 1930.
Windermere is crammed with quirky shops, little cafes, eateries, bars and cafes.
If you want to base yourself in Windermere, we have a fabulous selection of locations - bustling by the lake, or quieter sites and a farm up in the hills.
